Those planning a city escape next month should look no further, as Amsterdam is the perfect destination in April.

One of the reasons why the charming capital city of the Netherlands should be considered for a brief break is its distance from the UK.

The city is only a train ride away, with several Eurostar services running from London to Amsterdam every day.

The train ride, which takes tourists directly from London St Pancras International to the heart of the Dutch city, lasts for less than four hours.

Arriving at Amsterdam Centraal in April will allow visitors to experience a bonanza of colourful celebrations and events.

In early April, coffee lovers will be delighted to know the city is hosting the Amsterdam Coffee Festival.

While between 18 and 21 April, the Dutch capital will be home to the Wine Festival.

And throughout the whole of next month, Amsterdam will be in full bloom as the Tulip Festival is being hosted in Keukenhof, stunning gardens a train ride away from the city.

Most notably, on April 27 Amsterdam will turn orange to celebrate the Koningsdag, the birthday of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.

During this national holiday, the city will host an array of canal-side parties, music festivals, fun fairs and flea markets.

Many around the city dress in orange on this day in reference to the colour representing the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

Besides the events celebrated in Amsterdam in April, the city is more than worth visiting because of its outstanding museums – including one dedicated entirely to the works of Vincent Van Gogh – and its beautiful canals.

The beer and food that can be found in Amsterdam will also not disappoint – and neither will its beautiful cafes.

The Dutch capital is famous around the world for its nightlife and red quarter – but over the past few years the local government has been trying to freshen up the city’s image and present it as a holiday destination for families and couples rather than groups on a stag do.
