Mirjam Sombroek van Doorm, Professor of Law and Health, became a member of the Netherlands Sports Council in September 2024. This council is an independent advisory body that focuses on bolstering high level sport, grassroots sport and exercise for Dutch society.
The Netherlands Sports Council makes strategic and operational recommendations relating to sport-related topics. The council draws up these recommendations in collaboration with field experts from the sports world and academic experts. Through her membership, Professor Sombroek van Doorm will contribute to the goal of enhancing the influence of academic research on policy.
Alongside her role as Professor of Law and Health at Leiden University, Professor Sombroek van Doorm is also a visiting professor at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University and Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. These positions give her a unique international perspective on legal and ethical issues, with a particular focus on health law from a children’s rights perspective. She has expertise in both the legal aspects of health and children’s rights in a medical and healthcare context. Her experience as a disciplinary court judge at the Regional Healthcare Disciplinary Board in Amsterdam and her permanent membership of the Health Council of the Netherlands enrich her academic research and teaching. This also ensures her close connection to topical issues in Dutch society.
Professor Sombroek van Doorm is part of the Netherlands Sports Council’s ‘Sport-Related Brain Injury’ Committee. In this capacity, she is committed to championing the health and safety of professional sportspeople and children involved in sports. Using her legal expertise, she provides policy advice supported by underpinnings from both science and society.
